Section 5: Asking For Help in School

This section associates listening with the need for students to ask for help when they do not understand what they hear. Many students do not ask questions due to their fears of being put down by adults or being made fun of by peers. These students need to understand that learners are not passive; they are instead quick to ask questions and to seek out information. Here are some possible discussion topics for Section 5:

    A. How listening and asking for help are complementary.

    B. Why students may be afraid to ask for help.

    C. Ways for students to overcome their fears about asking for help.

    D. Positive results from asking for help.

    E. How students may improve their abilities to ask for help.
