Perspectives on Legal and Ethical Aspects of School Counseling

One of our graduate students, whose wife is a prominent attorney, suggested that our counselor education program needs a complete course dealing with the legal and ethical aspects of counseling. He and his wife had discussed at length the many difficult and troubling dilemmas school counselors confront involving legal and ethical matters. We acknowledged the worthiness of his suggestion and are considering the development of a course on law and ethics, but, of course, have limited faculty resources and face demands for new courses of equal importance.

How would you make the case for a new course on legal and ethics in school counseling? What, in your experience, provides compelling evidence for developing such a course? What other new courses might have equal or higher priority for you? Send us your ideas about the importance of legal and ethical matters in the work of school counselors. Include your most compelling ideas to justify a complete course on these matters.
