Perspectives on Individual and Group Counseling in Schools Counselor Education graduate students often have differing abilities and interests related to counseling interventions. Recently, we heard a student comment that she became a counselor education student primarily because of her interest in working individually with students. She was surprised to learn in her first school counseling course that some school counselors spend more time doing group interventions than individual interventions. She wondered what her future as a school counselor would be like. Would she be able to fulfill her desire to work individually with students or would she be spending more time in group work? Also, how much control would she have in making decisions about the interventions (individual or group) to use as a school counselor? What do you think about counseling interventions in schools? How do counselors choose which interventions to employ? |
