Perspectives on Advocacy in School Counseling

Some of our students, during their pursuit of graduate degrees, have assumed the role of advocate to improve the university’s educational environment for minority students and to improve the university’s physical environment for physically challenged students. These graduate student advocates have had to ask themselves serious questions before taking on the role of advocate, including, who will actually benefit from my advocacy and what risks do I face in assuming this role?

How do you feel about being someone who advocates for improving the educational environment? What are your overall thoughts about advocacy in school counseling?
