Step 3 - - Reality Testing Your Ideas
Now that you have summarized your inventive ideas about what you want a school counseling program to be, give it a reality check. Ask these questions about your program ideas:
1. How will my program enhance the academic, career, and personal/social development of students? If your program does not focus on one or more of these areas, why not?
2. Which aspects of your program meet developmental needs of students? Which aspects are preventive? Which aspects of your program are simply focused on responding to students' needs?
3. How will you collaborate within your school, school system, and larger community to implement your school counseling program?
4. How will you evaluate your program?
Be thoughtful and patient as you ask these questions about your programmatic ideas. You may want to write some of your responses to these questions.
When you are reasonably (not perfectly) satisfied that you have put your ideas through the test of reality, move to step 4.
