Harvard
Youth Violence Prevention Center

The Harvard Youth Violence Prevention Center (HYVPC) is
in its 2nd year of operation, after receiving CDC funding
in October of 2000. An interdisciplinary center based in
the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard
School of Public Health, HYVPC's focus is on research partnerships
and violence prevention within communities. HYVPC's area
partners include: (a) the Education Development Center in
Newton, MA, (b) the New England Medical Center, (c) seven
Boston-based community agencies, and (d) representatives
from a variety of government organizations, including the
Boston Public Health Commission, the Boston Police Department,
and the Boston Mayor's Office. Violence prevention is the
key issue for areas addressed by HYVPC. The Center's primary
goal is to advance the science of violence prevention through
partnerships with community organizations. Areas of particular
focus are: (1) violence prevention, (2) community improvement,
and (3) youth development.

The October Center for the Study and Prevention of Youth
Violence is a partnership between Virginia Commonwealth
University and the Greater Richmond Community. The Center
is dedicated to the promotion of culturally sensitive strategies
that effectively interrupt the cycle of violence, contribute

families can grow and thrive, free of violence. The October
Center was established by the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention as one of ten National Academic Centers of
Excellence on Youth Violence Prevention.

Youth Violence Project

school settings. The project conducts and disseminates research

Located at the University of Michigan School of Public Health,
the Youth Violence Prevention Center develops, implements
and monitors comprehensive strategies that help prevent
youth violence and promote healthy development through collaboration
among community, university and health department partners.
The focus of the Center is on interdisciplinary, ecologically
and culturally relevant, community-based approaches to violence
prevention. Its work is carried out by three distinct cores:
training, implementation and evaluation. The specific aims
of the Center are to: 1) build the scientific infrastructure
to support the development of community-wide youth violence
prevention interventions; 2) promote interdisciplinary strategies
that foster collaboration; 3) work with community members
to address youth violence prevention; 4) institutionalize
violence prevention in health provider practice and training;
and 5) develop an evaluation plan and surveillance system
to monitor progress. The Youth Violence Prevention Center
is based in Flint, Michigan and is community organizations.
Elementary through high school students participate in the
Center through the Youth Against Violence group. The YVPC
is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
